About Waffle House: The History of Waffle House.

Waffle House, the ubiquitous yellow diner chain, has become an integral part of Southern culture and a beloved breakfast spot for millions. With its 24/7 service, affordable prices, and hearty comfort food, Waffle House has earned a special place in the hearts of many. But beyond its culinary offerings, Waffle House is also a place of community, a refuge for late-night workers, early risers, and everyone in between.

The story of Waffle House begins in 1955, when Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner opened the first Waffle House in Avondale Estates, Georgia. Rogers, a former short-order cook, had a knack for creating delicious and satisfying meals. Forkner, a real estate developer, recognized the potential of a 24/7 diner catering to the needs of late-night workers and early risers. Together, they formed a formidable team, combining their expertise to create a dining experience that would soon become legendary.

The original Waffle House menu was surprisingly focused, with waffles taking center stage. The restaurant’s name, chosen by Forkner, reflected the importance of waffles in their culinary offerings. In addition to waffles, the menu featured a selection of classic diner staples like eggs, bacon, sausage, and hash browns.

The Waffle House concept quickly gained popularity, and the chain began to expand beyond its Georgia roots. By the 1970s, Waffle House had become a familiar sight in many Southern states. The company’s commitment to quality food, friendly service, and 24/7 availability continued to attract customers and drive expansion.

Waffle House has become more than just a restaurant; it’s a cultural phenomenon deeply embedded in Southern identity. The chain’s iconic yellow sign, with its distinctive syrup-shaped “W,” is recognized across the region. Waffle House has also become a popular gathering spot for locals and travelers alike, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.

Today, Waffle House has over 2,000 locations across 25 states, making it one of the largest diner chains in the United States. Despite its growth and expansion, Waffle House remains true to its Southern roots, continuing to serve up classic comfort food and provide a welcoming atmosphere for its loyal customers.

  1. You have to be CAREFUL! Almost every time I order the EXACT same meal, the prices are different. It’s strange. READ your check before PAYING!!
I LOVE WAFFLE HOUSE!!!! Only had one HORRIBLE experience in 30 years! I usually order the cheese eggs with raisin toast and hash browns. And I did, but I wasn’t able to see the guy cooking my food. I get my plate, I’m sitting in a bar seat on the very end, as all the tables were full. No biggie. So, I get my food, and notice no cheese in the scrambled eggs. I get the attention of the cook, explain the problem, and I’m NOT KIDDING!! He reaches, with NO gloves on HIS HANDS, grabs the eggs off my plate WITH his BARE HAND, and puts them in a pan. I’m SO GROSSED out by this, I LEAVE!!!! SHOCKED!! WOW!!! GRABS MY EGGS OFF MY PLATE WITH A BARE HAND!! YUCK!! Never had ANYTHING like THAT happen! COULDA USED A SPOON! Could have cooked some more eggs, NOPE!!!!
Secret burger tip: Ask the cook to put a sausage patty inside your beef hamburger patty!! Before he cooks it! SO GOOD!! Not on the menu, but they will gladly do it. FANTASTIC BEEF/sausage patty burger!! YUM!!!
